Radiation risks in neonatal intensive care units

Infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) are at the very beginning of their development and are highly vulnerable to external factors. Respiratory issues and clinical follow-ups often require frequent bedside X-Ray scans within the incubator.

To prevent scattered radiation from affecting sensitive organs outside the target zone and to ensure the safety of healthcare staff and infants in adjacent incubators, specialized shielding systems must be employed.

Shielding equipment used in NICUs

Standard adult protection equipment cannot be used in neonatal clinics. Instead, flexible and lightweight micro-designs tailored to infant anatomy are preferred:

  • Mini lead or lead-free gonad shields suitable for incubator use
  • Small eye and head protection shields for infants
  • Lightweight mobile lead curtains and barriers to shadow surrounding incubators
  • Lightweight front-protection or vest-skirt aprons for the staff conducting the imaging

Sterilization and hygiene standards

Infection risk is critical in neonatal units. Therefore, all protective equipment used in NICUs must be covered in antibacterial, waterproof fabrics that are easily disinfected with alcohol-free wipes.
