What is a Lead-Free Antimony Apron?

In the radiation protection sector, musculoskeletal disorders caused by medical staff wearing heavy lead aprons for long hours are one of the biggest occupational hazards. To address this issue, lead-free antimony aprons have been developed using lighter metals instead of lead.

Antimony (Sb) is a metal with a high ability to absorb X-rays and a much lower density than lead. The flexible protective layers obtained by mixing this metal homogeneously with polymers offer users excellent protection and lightweight comfort.

What are the Advantages of Antimony Aprons?

The primary advantages provided by lead-free antimony aprons can be summarized as follows:

  • Weight Reduction: They are 20% to 30% lighter than traditional lead aprons, thereby reducing back and shoulder strain.
  • Ergonomic Design: The flexible inner filling material conforms more easily to body contours and increases mobility.
  • Non-Toxic: Because they do not contain toxic heavy metals like lead, they are environmentally friendly during production, use, and disposal stages.

Protection Levels and Standards

Lead-free antimony aprons are tested in accordance with international IEC 61331-1 and IEC 61331-3 standards. These aprons fully provide 0.25 mm Pb, 0.35 mm Pb, or 0.50 mm Pb lead equivalent protection at diagnostic X-ray energies between 50 kV and 110 kV, just like leaded aprons.
