Why do lead aprons require special cleaning?
The lead or lead-free (antimony/barium mixture) protective layer used in the inner structure of lead aprons is extremely sensitive. Machine washing, spinning, or folding sharply can cause micro-cracks in the inner layers, leading to radiation leakage.
Therefore, lead aprons should never be machine washed or dry cleaned. Any abrasive or mechanical force seriously shortens the protective lifespan of the apron.
What are the correct cleaning and disinfection steps?
The outer surface of lead aprons is generally made of waterproof, stain-resistant polyurethane or similar durable fabrics. For daily cleaning, you should follow these steps:
- Wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth and mild soapy water.
- Never use bleach, alcohol-based heavy solvents, or abrasive chemicals.
- For disinfection, choose non-chlorine-based spray disinfectants approved by the manufacturer and wipe dry.
- Do not store the apron in a closet or hanger before it is completely dry after cleaning.
Storage and hanging rules
Folding aprons, piling them on top of each other, or leaving them over the back of a chair can cause the protective layers to crack.
For storage after cleaning, pay attention to the following:
- Always hang aprons on specially designed thick hangers or mobile rack systems.
- Do not store them in places exposed to direct sunlight, extreme heat, or humidity.
- Periodically (at least once a year), check the aprons under fluoroscopy or radiography (X-Ray crack testing) to test for cracks in the inner layers.
